Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Proverbs 31:8 (NIV)
Children need active, caring parents to teach, lead, nurture and equip them with biblical values and the skills necessary to navigate the many challenges of life (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Ephesians 6:4). However, a child at risk is typically living in an environment that naturally produces additional obstacles and their parents often lack the knowledge, resources, or the emotional support needed to parent well.
As Shepherd Advocates, we speak on behalf of these children and their families. We call on our churches to come alongside these families, providing the spiritual direction and emotional support needed to reconcile relationships, first to God and then to others. We also advocate for programs that provide support to at-risk families.
Across all ages, there are effective interventions for children and their parents. Some start before birth, others are proven to work with older youth, even serious juvenile offenders. While no program can prevent every problem or should replace the role of the parent, these investments are based on rigorous research and demonstrate what really works to help at-risk teen moms learn essential parenting skills, ensure children arrive at kindergarten ready to learn, assist families with troubled teens, and train and equip young men to become active fathers.
